El vallenato es un género musical autóctono de la Costa Caribe colombiana con epicentro en la antigua provincia de Padilla (actuales sur de La Guajira, norte del Cesar y oriente del Magdalena) y una variante importante en la región sabanera de los departamentos de Bolívar, Sucre, Córdoba. Su popularidad se ha extendido hoy a todas las regiones del país y países vecinos como Panamá, Venezuela, Ecuador y México. Se interpreta tradicionalmente con tres instrumentos: el acordeón diatónico, la guacharaca y la caja (tambor pequeño de cuero de chivo). Los ritmos o aires musicales del vallenato son el paseo, el merengue, la puya, el son y la tambora.1 El vallenato también se interpreta con guitarra y con los instrumentos de la cumbia en cumbiambas y grupos de millo.

Le groupe a été formé en 1960 à Cartagena de Indias, le chanteur étant Lucho Argaín. Le groupe s'est dissous en 1963, mais en 1975, Julio Ernesto Estrada "Fruko" Rincón, directeur du label Discos Fuentes reforme le groupe. En 1981, Mélida Yará, surnommée "La India Meliyará" est devenue la chanteuse leader du groupe, qui a connu ses plus grand succès à cette époque.

This 59-track, triple-disc anthology was loosely inspired by Public Television's examination of the turbulent '60s. Thus its three chapters ("The Vietnam Backbeat"/"There'll Be a 'Love-In' There"/"Message & Meaning") come not only organized around historical themes rather than musical ones, but focus almost exclusively on the decade's closing, Vietnam-war dominated third. Thus the only genuine artifacts from the Beatles-led British Invasion era (the movement that arguably defined much of the decade's music in one way or another) are the Kinks' proto-metal classic "You Really Got Me," Texan Bobby Fuller's roots-rousing answer to the shaggy Englishmen then dominating the charts, "I Fought the Law." Yet there's still enough leeway within that scope to showcase the era's rich eclecticism. Indeed, "rock" is a very loose term to describe a collection that includes classic soul (The Temptations, Jr. Walker, Percy Sledge and Martha and the Vandellas), sunny pop (Tommy James, The Monkees, Association), nascent psychedelia (Jefferson Airplane, Iron Butterfly, Strawberry Alarm Clock) and rootsy folk-rock (The Byrds, Grateful Dead).
